SAAFoST Cape Branch
15 July 2010
Dear Cape Branch Member,
South Africa has an estimated 14,000 unregulated "complementary medicines" - many of which are marketed for conditions that have considerable psychological ramifications, such as, weight-loss, sexual dysfunction, breast size, hair loss etc.
Irresponsible marketing and advertising, including the use of false, unsubstantiated claims and pseudoscience has extended into mainstream products including foodstuffs - e.g. waters that claim to be extra oxygenated or result in weight loss; skin lotions that purportedly attack cellulite and many more spring to mind.
The talk aims to explore and expand on a number of issues pertaining to irresponsible advertising, scams and pseudoscience; which could, at best be fraudulent - with the potential of victims suffering serious medical conditions with severe, even life-threatening consequences. Can you afford to miss this informative lecture?
Well, the Cape Branch Committee would like to invite you to attend an evening of networking and a talk to explore this topical, yet important subject, with Dr. Harris Steinman. The talk will be preceded by the BGM to elect new office bearers for the Cape Branch; for which you would have received separate notification.
About the Speaker:
Dr Harris Steinman is a medical doctor with extensive experience in the field of allergy and intolerance. He is head of FACTS (Food & Allergy Consulting and Testing Services) - a multidisciplinary team which includes dieticians and food scientists. The FACTS laboratory is the first in Africa to test commercial food products for reaction-causing substances.
As a member of SAAFoST, he has been intimately engaged in matters relating to, and affecting food, food manufacturing and food claims.
