SAAFoST Executive Breakfast Lecture: Nanotechnology

Dear SAAFoST Members,

You are invited to attend the second SAAFoST Executive Breakfast lecture of 2012.

It will be held on 3rd October at the Department of Food Science, University of Pretoria and will feature a, "Molecular Inspired Breakfast" which will be prepared by the University's Food and Nutrition Division of the Department of Consumer Science.

Executive Breakfasts bring food science and the food business together. In the spotlight this time, will be an emerging and novel technology which has been described as, "disruptive", because of the fundamental changes and potentially tremendous advances it can initiate through its impact on many aspects of food business, including food processing, food security, preservation, flavours and improved nutrition. Tens of billions of US Dollars have been invested worldwide in nanotechnology but toxicity and risk evaluation challenges abound - this presentation will address these and explore ways forward for nanotechnology across a shifting regulatory landscape.

The guest speaker on this occasion will be Dr Richard Canady. He is the Director of the Center for Risk Science Innovation and Application of the International Life Sciences Institute Research Foundation which fosters collaborative research in sustainable product development and risk management. Dr Canady is a leading expert in regulatory risk assessment and has been a senior policy advisor to the Office of the Commissioner of the US FDA and the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the White House.

SAAFoST is very grateful to ILSI South Africa for making Rick Canady available, at very short notice, to address members.
