SAAFoST Cape Branch Event Notice

Food Pathogens: Lessons learnt from recent outbreaks
Speaker: Professor Pieter Gouws

Dear Cape Branch Member,

The Cape Branch Committee of SAAFoST is very privileged to host Professor Pieter Gouws, who will address the Cape Branch on "Food Pathogens: Lessons learnt from recent outbreaks" on Thursday, 18 August 2011.

Prof Pieter Gouws is an Associate Professor in Food Microbiology at UWC. He is a member of various professional associations and societies and has published many research publications, articles, conference publications and manuscripts.

His research in food microbiology centres on food safety, food borne pathogens, diagnostics and preservation. The primary focus is on the development and improvement of rapid DNA methods for the detection and quantification of pathogenic bacteria in food and water. Food pathogens currently studied are Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli 0157 and Staphylococcus aureus.

Prof Gouws is also using molecular methods to fingerprint bacterial strains, in order to establish microbial critical control points (HACCP) in the food manufacturing environment. A third focus addresses the link between food and agricultural microbiology. He is also involved in the implementation of food safety and quality management systems.
