The International Association of Engineering and Food, of which SAAFoST is a member, arranges a congress (ICEF) every four years. This provides a forum for scientists of many disciplines, not just engineers. This year at ICEF11 in Athens, more than 400 oral and more than 600 poster presentations provided a view of the cutting edge technologies that will be shaping the food industry's ability to meet the technical challenges of the 21st century.

At this conference Andrew presented a paper entitled "Theoretical energy calculations for food processing under South African conditions". During his talk to SAAFoST members, he will present a resume of his paper as well as a summary of some of the questions raised at the congress such as -

  • How much water is needed to produce a kilo of pork or a cup of tea?
  • What are the trends in non-thermal technology and is there now a winner?
  • Is there nano in food?
  • What are the engineers saying about food safety? and
  • What is brewing on Beer Island?
