SAAFoST Cape Branch: BGM/Event Notice

Dear Cape Branch SAAFoST Member,

The Cape Branch Committee of SAAFoST is very privileged to host Dr Harris Steinman, presenting a very topical and controversial subject that has been making the headlines earlier this year with the mislabelling of meat products. The title of his talk is: What is species determination? A focus on cross-contamination and adulteration.

Dr Steinman is the Director of Food & Allergy Consulting & Testing Services (FACTS) which conducts species determination and allergen analysis. He serves on the Food Legislation Advisory Group (FLAG) of the Department of Health and is a Professional Member of SAAFoST.

Food labelling has been in the spotlight following the European horse-meat scandal and the findings of a recent study by the University of Stellenbosch where undeclared ingredients were found in a number of meat products in South Africa.

An article released by City Press mid-April 2013, sought to "name and shame" several major retailers who allegedly failed to fully disclose the ingredients in some of their meat products. In response to these allegations, several players in the industry have responded by stating that unavoidable cross-contamination is to blame and that the products are nonetheless fit for human consumption.

Many consumers have voiced their concerns regarding the mislabelling of meat products and its implications, which span the health, economic, religious and ethical spheres.

Get some insight into species determination, cross-contamination and adulteration. Prior to the presentation, take part in the Cape Branch Biennial General Meeting (BGM) and meet the Branch Committee for the period 2013 to 2015.

More detail on the programme and booking procedure follows. The venue is generously sponsored by Bidfood Solutions. Places are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Kind regards

Jacques van den Berg
