SAAFoST Northern Branch Afternoon Event at the Southern African Grain Laboratory featuring International Grain Scientist and Expert, Dr Sajid Alavi

SAAFoST Northern Branch is delighted to invite you to an afternoon event on Thursday 30th May 2013, focusing on Grain Science and Technology. Our host is the Southern African Grain Laboratory (SAGL) and we will have the opportunity to tour their facilities. The tour will be combined with a talk from international grain scientist and expert, Dr Sajid Alavifrom the Department of Grain Science and Industry, Kansas State University, US.


Since June 2010, SAGL is operating from a custom designed laboratory space in the Grain Building. SAGL is continuously expanding the services offered in line with needs identified in the industry. As reference laboratory to the grain industry, one of the goals is to remain internationally relevant by delivering a competitive service in the field of grading, milling, chemical and rheological testing under ISO 17025 Accreditation. Wiana Louwjoined the laboratory as General Manager during 2009 and she will give a short introduction on the activities of the SAGL followed by a tour through the laboratories.

The tour will be followed by a technical talk by Dr Sajid Alavi.

Dr Sajid Alavi


Sajid Alavi received his B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, India in 1995, M.S. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, PA in 1997 and Ph.D. in Food Science/Food Engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 2001. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Grain Science and Industry at Kansas State University since 2002. Dr. Alavi's research interests lie in food engineering and more specifically in the areas of extrusion processing of food and feed materials, rheology, food microstructure imaging, structure - texture relationships, and value added uses of agricultural materials and residues.

Innovations in Extrusion: Configuring a multi-operation, low-shear, semi-cold process for novel and nutritious products.
