Salt Reduction Consultative Meeting

Consultative Meeting on Salt Reduction (2): Dept of Health 21 July 2011

The Dept of Health, through the Deputy Director-General of Strategic Health Programmes, called for a second meeting of the Salt Reduction Consultative Committee.

It was held at the Dept of Health on 21 July 2011 and Chaired by Prof Melvyn Freeman, Cluster Manager: Non-communicable Diseases.

Mr Dries Pretorius, Head, Directorate Food Control presented the accompanying presentation on the reduction of salt within the context of health legislation.

The first such meeting was held at the DoH on 30 November 2010, prior to the Minister of Health declaring that a salt reduction programme, assisted by possible legislation, was being considered to reduce the levels of sodium / salt found in processed foods in South Africa.

Very relevant to both meetings are two presentations that have been placed on the SAAFoST website for reference:

  1. Salt, Evidence and Action - presented at the above meeting by Graham MacGregor, Prof of Cardiovascular Medicine, London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is a well-known campaigner with, "WASH" (World Action on Salt and Health) for the reduction of sodium/salt in the diet in the EU and kindly let me have a copy of his detailed presentation for our website.
  2. Making the most of bread: New challenges in the bread industry - presented by Jeannette Rosewall to SAAFoST members during a visit to Anchor Yeast on 31 May 2011 and addressing the issue of salt reduction in the baking industry.
(For the presentations, see:, past events, (a) 30-11-10) and (b) 31-3-11 respectively).
