Membership Categories & Fees

Classes of Membership

The classification of members is as follows:

Honorary Life Member
An Honorary Life Member shall be a person who has rendered outstanding service in the advancement of the objects of the Association and is elected by the members at a Biennial General Meeting.

Professional Member
A Professional Member shall be a person: i) who qualifies for registration as a natural scientist or science technologist in terms of the Natural Scientific Professions Act 1993 (Act No. 106 of 1993), or ii) who has applied to, and been accepted by, Council as a Professional Member.

Member
A Member shall be a person who does not qualify for Professional Membership, but who is, or has been, actively engaged, or is interested, in any activity related to food science and technology.

Institution Member
An Institution Member shall be a company, research institution or other body engaged directly, or indirectly, in food science or technology. An Institution Member shall designate one representative, preferably from its senior scientific or technical personnel, to represent the institution in the Association.

Student Member
A Student Member shall be a person who is following a course of technical, practical or scientific training, as approved by the Executive Committee of the Council. Honorary Life Members and Professional Members shall be Corporate Members, and Institution Members, Members and Student Members shall be non-Corporate Members.

Custodian Members
This is a select group of Institution Members who subscribe to additional principles in promoting and upholding professional standards of competence and integrity in advancing food science and related technologies for the provision of safe and wholesome food. Conditions of membership are as follows:

  1. To act with integrity in the business of providing safe and wholesome food for the nation.
  2. To support the food science & technology profession.
  3. To subscribe to the principle of the members' professional code of conduct, to be a signatory to the code and to display the certificate.
The selection will be either by invitation of the Executive Director and Exco or by application. In the latter case, the application would need the approval of the Executive Director and Exco. The annual fee will be set at the Biennial General Meeting and this group will be partners and will be consulted on prioritising special objectives to be achieved by SAAFoST. Such objectives might include projects involving: education, legislation, consumer information, technical information for industry, etc. This group will receive feedback on progress against these objectives twice per annum.

Custodian Members will receive a framed certificate and will be entitled to use the following statement on their stationery/Promotional Literature: ".... is a SAAFoST Custodian Member". (Use of the SAAFoST logo is not permitted.)

Membership Fees From 2005/2006 to 2008/2009

The following membership fees were approved at the Biennial General Meeting held in Durban on 4 September 2007. It must be noted that SAAFoST had to register as a VAT vendor during 2003 and all fees are now subject to the addition of VAT.

All 2010 rates are INCLUSIVE of VAT which is currently at 14%.

The 2008/2009 fees are for a period of 18 months (1 July 2008 to 31 December 2009).

Additional Fees For Members Not Resident In The Republic Of South Africa

Please note that individuals not resident in South Africa are required to pay an additional R70.00 to cover the clearance of the foreign cheque/electronic deposit/telegraphic transfer of the membership fees. In addition, a further R50.00 is required if the notices of the Branch activities are desired.
