In South Africa, legislation on food falls under many different government departments such as veterinary, health, agriculture etc.  However, efforts are being made to consolidate the legislation.

Most of the legislation of concern to the food scientist is covered by the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act 54 of 1972 and regulations under the act. This Act is administered by the Department of Health.
