A Report on a SAAFoST visit to the IUFoST Congress in Nantes. Sept 2006

An official SAAFoST delegation attended the 2006 IUFoST Congress in
Nantes in Northwest France in September.  There were three main
objectives for the delegation and these were firstly to meet with
various IUFoST committees to ensure that our planning for the 2010
congress is on the right track. To this end, successful meetings were
held with the Govering Council of IUFoST; the Chairperson of the
IUFoST Scientific Council; the Chairman of the Nantes 2006 Scientific
Committee; and the President of the Chinese Institute of Food Science
& Technology (CIFST), organisers of the 2008 IUFoST congress to be
held in Shanghai.

The second objective was to gain insight into the organisational
framework, venues, facilities, etc., required to host the congress.
This included the attendance of all the plenary sessions as well as
many of the parallel sessions in order to both asses the standard of
the scientific programme and to identify speakers and topics for 2010.

And finally the delegation went over to promote the 2010 Congress to
be held in Cape Town.  While we were not allowed to upstage the CIFST
marketing efforts for 2008, hundreds of brochures were given to
conference delegates and many more given to contacts and friends to
take back to other member organisations of IUFoST.

All in all it can be said that the SAAFoST delegation was successful
in achieving its objectives of attending the 13th World Congress of
IUFoST  - mission accomplished.
