Journalism Awards - it's that time of the year again when members are asked to submit the best articles on food safety, food additives, food processing, etc., encountered in 2006. The purpose of the "SAAFoST Meritorious Awards for Journalism" is to encourage and reward journalists who produce objective and scientifically correct articles or programmes that help improve the consumers' knowledge of complex and controversial food issues. Please participate and help find the most responsible journalists in the land.

Two awards are available  - one for the printed media and one for the electronic media  - the former to have been published in South African newspapers / periodicals / magazines, the latter to have been broadcast on local radio or television in the calendar year 2006. Each award is worth R5,000 and if you happen to be the nominator of one of the winners you could collect the 'finders" fee of R1,000! The Award winning printed media articles for 2004 and 2005 can be viewed on: www.saafost.org.za

Nomination forms are available from the national secretary or can be downloaded from the website. Closing date for nominations: 30 April 2007.

Awards may be presented at the SAAFoST Biennial Congress Banquet in Durban on 4 September.

----- Journalism Bursary  - because of the importance that SAAFoST places on responsible reporting, a journalism bursary is being considered for Professional members of the Association who are considering doing a formal journalism course and writing regularly on food science, technology and nutrition issues. Food Advisory Consumer Service  - FACS will again be celebrating International Consumer Rights Day, on 15 March, by printing and distributing 120, 000 copies of the updated FACS brochure, "Food and Nutrition Facts". This year the help of the major food retailers will be sought in distributing the leaflets. As a further boost to improving communication with consumers, a one-day FACS workshop is being planned as part of the SAAFoST Durban Congress. The Continuing Education Programme (CEP)  - SAAFoST encourages continuing post-graduate food science and technology education and will endorse appropriate professionally conducted courses and workshops that comply. These should be well structured, of sound content and be presented by recognised education entities using qualified and experienced lecturers who are SAAFoST Professional members, or the equivalent. Certificates of competence should be issued and courses should be good value for money. More information is available from the Executive Director at the e-mail address above.

The SAAFoST Delegation to Nantes  - a delegation of Council members attended the IUFoST Congress in Nantes in September to 1) confirm that progress with the 2010 World Congress in Cape Town was on track, 2) to evaluate the organisational framework in Nantes and 3) to promote the 2010 event in Cape Town. Many meetings were held with various IUFoST Committees and office bearers, all plenary and parallel sessions were attended to assess standards and identify speakers and hundreds of 2010 pamphlets were distributed. Contact was also established with the organisers of the 2008 World Congress in Shanghai thus rounding off a very fruitful visit to France.

Nigeria Visit  - a healthy group of about fourteen locals responded to the invitation from the Nigerian Institute for Food Science and Technology (NIFST) to attend its 30th annual conference in Lagos in October last year. Day one of the event was designated "South Africa Day" during which past-president, Nigel Sunley delivered the opening address on, "South African Food Science and Technology  - Past, Present and Future". Future collaboration with the NIFST, an organisation similar to SAAFoST in many ways, was discussed and a reciprocal invitation, to the SAAFoST Biennial Congress in September, in Durban, was issued.

..... The SAAFoST Travel Grant  - professional members who wish to participate in international food science related events may apply for this grant. See www.saafost.org.za for guidelines, application forms and deadline dates.

The Consumer Protection Bill  - this is seemingly in its final stage of revision and entering a process which could see it tabled in Parliament in July and, after a three month or so public hearing, becoming an Act towards year end. Members will be kept informed of its progress.
