SAAFoST Cape Branch Event Notice

Dear Cape Branch Member,

The Cape Branch Committee of SAAFoST is very excited to host something best loved in the Western Cape, a chocolate and wine pairing evening along with a discussion about the chocolate making process.

The evening would consist of integrating the chocolate and wine pairing with a PowerPoint slide show on chocolate appreciation. This will take approximately between 1 and 1.5 hours and each attendee would also receive a 1st Batch Taster Pack, from which the chocolate for the pairing comes from and any left-over may be taken home to share with someone.

There would be a pairing of four chocolates with 4 Spice Routes wines.

An article exploring the similarities between chocolate and, more specifically, the cocoa bean and wine started a journey into chocolate that has led to a full time obsession.

Pieter, an electronic engineer, started making chocolate as a hobby in his garage after reading this article. Using his engineering background, all the machines required for a "Bean to Bar" chocolate factory were designed and custom built over a period of three years. This happened in parallel with teaching himself how to make chocolate. The unique equipment, along with age-old chocolate making techniques, gives DV Artisan Chocolate a uniquely different flavour profile and texture.

Today DV Artisan Chocolate is one of the few "Bean to Bar" chocolate factories in the world and manufactures, amongst others, a range of single origin chocolate.

Enjoying these single origin chocolates with wine presents the ultimate natural flavour pairing.

70% Dark chocolate without any additives or flavourings showcases the vast and complex array of flavours inherent in the cocoa bean. Wine is similarly complex due to the influence of "terroir".

In his presentation Pieter will also be sharing some insights into the agricultural and manufacturing processes that ultimately lead to the finished chocolate.

This is a fund raising event and the funds will be used to sponsor students to register and attend the SAAFoST conference in Pretoria from 7 - 9 October 2013.

The venue, snacks and drinks are very generously sponsored by BIDFood Solutions.

Places are limited to 50, so book early to avoid disappointment.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Kind regards

Jacques van den Berg
