In 2021, the Board of Trustees is chaired by Janusz Luterek, a senior partner at Hahn & Hahn Patent Attorneys. The other trustees are Lucia Anelich, Owner of Anelich Consulting and Treasurer of the Foundation, Francina Makhoane, Regulatory and Scientific Affairs Manager at Nestle South Africa and Hettie Schonfeld, Professor in Nutrition at the University of Pretoria. We believe that the Board is well balanced with experienced business people, legal and regulatory expertise and academic experience in the food industry.
Prior to 2021, David Watson was the Chair (and first Chair) of the Foundation. His untimely passing in February 2021 came as a huge shock to everyone who knew David. The Board of Trustees pays tribute to the immense dedication that David had for the Foundation. His leadership and passion for growing the younger generation of food scientists and technologists is immensely appreciated.
Irene Burke, the SAAFoST Membership Development Officer, is assisting the Board with the administration of bursaries, which includes the selection of suitable candidates as recipients of the bursaries, liaising with the tertiary institutions and monitoring students’ progress. In 2020, the Foundation is administering 22 bursaries of which 9 are funded by companies operating in the food industry. The Board of Trustees is striving to get other food industry businesses to become donors of bursaries for qualifying students, which are then administered by the Foundation.
